Celebrating return of Brew & Stew

CRESCO - Irish eyes were smiling on Cresco Saturday, as perfect weather and a crowd of over 300 green-and-orange-clad revelers gathered to support the Cresco Firefighters, Prairie Springs Recreational Trail, and Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation at the Brew & Stew.
The 19th event returned in grand fashion after a year hiatus. Diane Henry, president of F.I.T. Running Club and Brew & Stew, said she was pleased with the turnout:
“We have beautiful weather, and the path is clear for the runners, walkers and bicycle riders. We have participants from as far away as Florida. We took a break for one year, and we are happy with the number of participants this year,” she said.
The aforementioned Floridian, Danielle Zemola, was dressed in a leprechaun costume, and joined by family members Robin Lepa, Greg Zemola and Paighton Zemola.
Lepa said she and her family were inspired to take part in the 5K Fun Run/Walk after a health scare affected them in January.
“My husband had a heart attack on New Year’s Day, and so we decided to quit smoking and get healthy,” she said, adding that she had no idea her daughter, an avid runner, was going to fly to Cresco from Tallahassee for Brew & Stew.
Zemola said, “This is my mom’s first 5K, so I wanted to be here with her.”
Meanwhile, the costume contest summoned imaginative and zany creations from Brew & Stew participants.
Judges Jim Perry and Curt McNew, retired and current employees with Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation, one of the beneficiaries of Brew & Stew, said they made their decisions based on a few factors.
“We are judging them on a theme; whether the costume is homemade or not, how creative it is, and overall appearance,” Perry said. “There are group and individual winners.”
