Council learns of constr. updates

CRESCO - At the Sept. 16 meeting, Public Works Director Rod Freidhof updated Cresco City Council members on the street light project which was close to being completed.
In addition, his department is busy with planning for the Vernon Road projects.
• City Clerk Michelle Girolamo reported Featherlite had a leak and was billed an extra $7,000. The meter report showed the exact usage.
• Library Director Cynthia Kay said the library had water come into the building during the previous heavy rains. The library is also planning for the annual silent auction.
• Dave Brenno reported on the Park Board. Memberships at the Cresco Fitness Center are down. Pool renovation plans are underway, and the center signed an agreement with the school for gym rental.
For the parks, a scoreboard is being purchased for the Kessel ball field, and the ice skating rink is being painted.
• Daren Sikkink from WHKS noted Skyline Construction was awarded the contract for replacing the water main on Vernon Road. The bid was $329,295.43, compared with $336,660 from Generation X Construction. The engineer’s estimate for the project was $440,000.
• Council approved for the Mayor to enter into a 28E Agreement with Howard County for law enforcement services regarding the jail.
• Council agreed to submit a letter to Alliant Energy objecting to the proposed increase of rates.
• Council acquired property at 119 5th Ave. East through the nuisance abatement procedure. The City has about $7,000 invested so far. The City will ask a contractor if it is worth putting it up for auction by sealed bids.
• Mayor Mark Bohle read an official response to concerns brought up by Dan Weness at the Sept. 4 meeting. It stated the proposal given by BDM Properties met the requirements of the RFP (Request for Proposal).
• During open discussion, Nate Schwickerath (partner of Weness) responded to a letter he received from the City. He did not feel the RFP was met by BDM, because of wording saying the project would “hopefully” be finished.
Girolamo admitted she was the one who used “hopefully” in her minutes. Afterward, she listened to the recordings, and it was never said.
Schwickerath asked to listen to the recordings from several meetings to verify the wording.
The next Council meeting will be on Monday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
