Cresco Community Chapel hosts open house, concert

CRESCO - It has taken nearly two years to complete the huge addition to Cresco Community Chapel at 24024 Hwy. 9 East. The congregation wants to celebrate its completion by having an open house, supper (barbecue sandwiches and more) and a concert on Sunday, Aug. 29, starting at 4:30 p.m. The concert, featuring Westward Road, begins at 6 p.m.

New Addition
The planning for a new addition to Cresco Community Chapel began in January 2018, with groundbreaking taking place in May 2019. Even before construction, $290,000 from the general fund was set aside for the work. It was finished in early 2021 at a total cost of $539,000.
Congregation member Mary Steen noted, “All the funds for the building were donated, and it is debt-free. There were lots and lots and lots of volunteer hours that went into the building.”
The addition was built onto the auditorium/sanctuary and foyer, which was constructed in 2006, making that section of the complex the oldest.
Steen stated, “We moved into the Featherlite Center from April to August since we lost our bathrooms. They were gracious to let us use it.”
Included in the new part are bathrooms/storm shelter, multi-purpose room classrooms, offices and kitchen.
Walking into the building from the front door, visitors will see the auditorium to the left and multi-purpose room to the right.
The multi-purpose room seats 250 in chairs and 150 with tables and chairs. It also has basketball hoops, volleyball inserts and an AWANA circle.
A new kitchen was added during the 2010 remodelling and those cupboards and appliances were transferred to the 2021 project, which had the same footprint.
The bottom floor also includes the pastor’s office, nursery and an unheated storage area.
The church is handicapped assessable, including the second story, which houses Sunday school classrooms, storage, youth pastor office and another office.
Any child or young adult can join AWANA (K-6), which meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. starting on Sept. 22 or Aletheia (7-12), which meets on Sundays at various times.
During construction, on July 21, 2019, the congregation had a Raise Your Praise event after church. Congregation members were able to have lunch and tour the building. They wrote their names on the two by fours and added a Bible verse or phrase. Steen smiled, “My grandkids still remember where they put their names.”
Now the entire community can tour the completed building and enjoy some food and a concert.

Westward Road
A concert by Westward Road will begin at 6 p.m.
The group is comprised of the Roberts family of Indiana, Scott, a 20-year veteran worship leader and nation charting songwriter, and his wife, the talented and award-winning vocalist, Kelli Roberts. Their oldest son, Garrett, completes the gifted musical family with his smooth vocal tones.
Their “out of the box” take on worship and gospel music paired with their God-given ability to communicate the Good News takes audiences into the presence of God in a very powerful way.  They have performed for audiences in large theaters and for intimate settings in rural churches, festivals and fairs.
According to the Pendleton Times-Post, “They’ve combined their love of God, music and family to create Westward Road, a high-energy Christian country/southern gospel trio who travel the states sharing their faith through music.”
A Westward Road concert leaves a person uplifted by their message of hope and encouraged to live a life of trust in God.
Steen invites everyone to attend the open house on Aug. 29. “We are praising God that the construction is complete, and we just want to celebrate!”
