Cresco TPD purchases Print Shop Plus

~ Long time Cresco business owner looks forward to retirement
CRESCO  - Jim Turvold, owner of Print Shop Plus, has announced the sale of his business and assets to the Cresco Times Plain Dealer, which took place on March 1, 2020.
For the past 25 years, Turvold has been running his establishment out of his building located at 216 North Elm Street, located right next to the TPD office. The Cresco TPD will not be purchasing the building from Turvold, but the equipment, accounts and assets will be transferred over.
“I’m looking forward to retiring––yes, very much . . . I’ve been at this for 25 years,” stated Turvold, who had been operating the entire business by himself. “It’s time for me to slow down.”
Turvold commented that he’s happy the business is staying in town.
“It’s really great that my customers don’t have to look for a different printer,” he added. “The files we’ve created over the past 25 years are still workable and changeable for the new owners. I’ve had a lot of loyal customers over the years and truly appreciate them for their business and bringing their printing in to me. I hope they continue to do business in town and help the community thrive.”
Turvold has been married to Diane for the past 45 years and has one daughter, Kristy, who is married to son-in-law Chris. They have two granddaughters, Kaylee and Clara, who keep their grandparents plenty busy.
As for Turvold, he’ll just enjoy the retired life.
“I would like to do more fly fishing and definitely a little more golf,” he added. “Possibly do a little more traveling in the winter as well.”
As for the business, the good news with the purchase is not losing any experience in the printing industry as Dan Evans, publisher of the TPD has over 30 years of expertise in the field along with several members of his staff . . . offering over 50 years of combined experience.
“This will be a great fit for us at the TPD,” stated Evans, who will handle any quotes and help with much of the printing. “We have moved the big copier, that Jim had over at Print Shop Plus, to our facility, and we’ll continue to offer the quality and service you would expect with a printing operation, such as what Jim had.”
Evans stated that Theresa Hudecek, the office manager, will handle much of the copier services with the help of staff members Marcie Klomp, Nate Troy and Betty Schmitt.
“They have all been trained to run the copier and can pretty much handle any of your needs,” added Evans, who has been pleased with how easy the transaction has taken place. “The copier is capable of four-color work with 8 1/2 x 11, 8 1/2 x 14 and 11 x 17 sizes available. However, if you need postcards, smaller flyers (two up on a sheet), or other sizes, we are capable of that as well. We can also print on heavier stock and have an assortment of copy paper available in different colors, textures and more.”
Evans noted the copier can also staple in the corner, is capable of folding and stapling into a booklet format (as a stitch bind on the fold to 8 1/2 x 11 or 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 size) and can do duplex (back to back) and more. It can also fold to half or tri-fold and is capable of glossy.
“We elected to lease the copier for an additional year to see how well it does for us, and we’re hoping to keep it plenty busy over the next 11 months,” said Evans. “We’ve also kept the copies priced the same as what Jim had it, and are looking forward to any challenge given us from our customers.”
The TPD will also gain Print Shop Plus’ equipment, which includes a printing press, a cutter, numerous bindery machines, additional paper stock and more. The TPD currently works with Evans Printing of Riceville, which will use some of the equipment for jobs over 500 and already has a press capable of printing envelopes, forms and more.
“Much of our printing is done digitally right now, but we still do plenty of envelopes and carbonless on press,” stated Evans, who notes that the longer runs being printed will keep costs down and affordable to the customers. “It’s important that we continue with our printing presses in keeping things affordable for our area customers.”
As for the change, Evans stated that Turvold has been “extremely helpful with our staff” in making the transition go smoothly.
“We’re grateful that Jim is still right next door to us when we have questions about some of the printing,” Evans explained. “He’s been wonderful to work with, and we can’t thank him enough for his advice and knowledge.”
As for the change, Evans stated that it’s “business as usual” in the transaction, and he’s looking forward to building on the printing and creating a “lifetime” of customers.
“We know the business inside and out and are looking forward to serving the many customers Jim had over the years, but also to help new customers in creating printing they’ll be proud of, at a price they’ll also enjoy.”
