Crestwood Dollars for Scholars Phonathon is Wednesday, Jan. 30

Cresco - Community members are invited to help fund scholarships for Crestwood High School students during the school's annual Dollars for Scholars Phonathon Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Crestwood High School students will reach out to the community by telephone call the evening of Jan 30 beginning at 6 p.m. with a hope to end the phonathon between 8:30-9 p.m. 

Dollars for Scholars Board member Trish Hartman said, “Dollars for Scholars is an event where high school students make phone calls to potential community donors. We hope the community will help support us, whether that is by donating $1, $5 or $10, $20 or more. It's a great way to help our students attend post-secondary education. Our goal this year is $21,000.” 

She continued, “We have a phonathon every year and we use that money for the current group of seniors. We ask the juniors to help because next year they need the juniors to also help them call so that they can reap those benefits for next year.”

Students making calls to the community during the 2019 Dollars for Scholars phonathon discussed how they got involved in the event:

Kristen Reicks (Senior): “I did the phonathon last year. I like to help out people financially and encourage (fellow students) to make calls so they can get more money for scholarships.”

Mattie Slavin (Junior): “This is my first year doing the phonathon. I thought it looked like a nice organization to help my fellow students get scholarships.”

Brooklyn Ferrie (Senior): I took part in Dollars for Scholars last year. I did it last year, and I hadn't known what it was until I joined and did the phonathon. When you are a representative for Dollars for Scholars, you can get the word out to your classmates about what it actually is, so you can have more people help call and you can get more people to donate for scholarships.”

Erin Ryan (Junior): “This is my first time doing the phonathon. I think it is a very good way to help fellow classmates and it is nice to make the calls and help with scholarships.” 

Dollars for Scholars has been giving scholarships since 1993 and has presented over $2 million in scholarships to students since then. Students must submit a first-semester transcript and a second-semester schedule when they collect their scholarship money.

Its mission statement is ‘To enhance the opportunity of Crestwood High School Students to benefit from post-secondary education through scholarships and community support.’
