Doing it for Jerry

—Elma friends finish Steven’s last job
ELMA - It was a shock to the area when Elma Mayor and Howard County Supervisor Jerry Steven died suddenly at the age of 67 on Aug. 6, 2020 while working on the Regional Health Services of Howard County (RHSHC) Clinic in Elma.
He was the general contractor for the project, and forward progress could have stalled, but not in Elma. Friends and business associates stepped up to finish what Steven could not.
City Clerk Shannon Gebel explained that after his death, the Mennonite contractor who helped construct the building came in and finished the mudding that Steven was working on.
Justin Newell of RHSHC painted the walls.
“Dale Roethler at Busti Lumber has been instrumental in pulling all of the contractors and volunteers together and getting our materials ordered,” Gebel noted.
Roethler downplayed his role. “Jerry had it all done for the most part. I just let guys know when they could work on their part — the electricians, plumbers.” Overall, he said the project went well and was under budget thanks to the Mennonite community.
