Fire at Howard County hog barn

This amazing picture was taken by Kelsey Schumacher, who was on the Regional Health Services of Howard County’s Elma Ambulance crew during an early Sunday morning, Aug. 7, fire at the intersection of Quail Ave. and 180th St.’s Reicks View Farms’ hog barns. She noted she was just lucky to get the picture at the right time.

Besides Elma Ambulance, fire departments helping Elma Fire Department with the blaze were Protivin and Cresco from Howard County, as well as Alta Vista, North Washington and New Hampton from Chickasaw County.

Reicks View Farm shared on Facebook it was a finishing barn. “There was heavy damage throughout the building, and no estimates are available at this time. No employees or firefighters were injured in the fire.”

The blaze started around midnight and firefighters and ambulance crew members were there until around 5:30 a.m. The fire was still smoldering on Monday afternoon.
