Flag Retirement Ceremony

CRESCO - There are a few rules of etiquette associated with the United States flag. Most locals know that when veterans carry Old Glory through a parade route to stand, remove a hat (for men) and salute or put the right hand over the heart as the flag passes.
When flags get tattered and torn from flying high, they need to be disposed of in a Flag Retirement Ceremony. The Cresco American Legion will be performing the ceremony on Flag Day, June 14.  It will be held at Evans Park at 6 p.m.
The public is encouraged to bring their old flags to the park for proper disposal. Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony with or without a flag.
Afterwards a free meal will be offered to those attending. Any veteran is then welcome to stay for the monthly meeting.
Legion members plan to make the Flag Retirement Ceremony an annual event.
Replacement flags
For individuals who would like to replace a tattered flag or start putting one out, Legion members are asking for a $25 donation or $30 to have a member replace it on the pole.
Checks can be made out to American Legion, 113 Park Place, Cresco, IA 52136. Include a phone number so it can be delivered. For questions, contact any Legion member or call Dodd Franklin at 563-203-8077.
