Freedom Rock unveiling

CRESCO - Veterans Day, Nov. 11, dawned cold and rainy, but that didn’t stop locals from attending the unveiling of the Freedom Rock.
A welcome was given by Jim Perry, Commander American Legion Post 135 and Rick Slifka, Commander of VFW Post 4561. The American Flag was then raised, and lowered again in recognition of the holiday. (The flag pole is the same one the VFW Auxiliary had at the Cresco Pool.)
During the opening prayer, Skip Grinhaug noted, “This Freedom Rock is our symbol to pay tribute to all the men and women in our county who answered the call to service of this great country.”
Next, the other flags at the site were raised by representatives of those who donated for a specific flag, including POW/MIA flag (William Ondrashek), Iowa (Sovereign family), Army (Protivin American Legion  Post 605), Marine (Burke family), Navy (Panos family), Air Force (Amy Bouska), Coast Guard (Shopko hometown Cresco) and Merchant Marine (Croell Ready Mix).
The rock, that was donated by Ray Bina, was unveiled by his family.
Afterwards, a light lunch was served at the Legion Hall.
A dedication of the Freedom Rock Memorial Park will be held in spring 2018, which is when all the landscaping will be finished by Reicks Monuments & Stone/Landscape.
