—Howard County Girls Scouts starting to sell cookies
Howard County - On Jan. 18, Girl Scout Cookie Season launches, celebrating the largest financial investment in girls annually in the United States! The annual program is a powerful entrepreneurship incubator for the next generation of female leaders. Each and every Girl Scout Cookie purchase is key to supporting the change-makers of today and tomorrow.
Howard County has four groups that make up Service Unit 619. The group’s Facebook page is: “Girl Scouts Cresco IA.”
• Chris and Liz Gjere are the leaders of Troops 6341 and 7563 from the Cresco area. For more information or to order cookies from a scout, contact Chris at cgcowboy@mediacombbnet.
• Kelly Larson of Troop 75 works with seventh and eighth grade girls in Cresco. To find more information or order cookies, contact her at thenut firstname.lastname@example.org.
• Shannon Gebel of Troop 488 leads the three Elma and three Alta Vista girls in scouts. Check them out on Elma Girl Scouts. Or give Gebel a call at 563-379-0999 to get an order of cookies.
• Lime Springs and Chester folks can contact Kelly Olson-Jessen, leader of Troop 28, to find a Girl Scout from whom to get some cookies. Her contact number is 563-387-7358.
Practicing for sales
Recently, all the scouts from the local troops had a Cookie Rally at Cresco Fitness Center. They learned how to set goals, practiced counting money and had mock cookie sales.
More than half of female entrepreneurs and business owners are Girl Scout alums and past cookie sellers. Today’s Girl Scouts are developing essential business skills that are imperative for a strong workforce and economy tomorrow.
~ When a girl in kindergarten counts back change to a customer at a cookie booth, she develops the courage to share her voice.
~ When a girl in elementary school works with her troop to collect donations of cookies for the military, she builds her character by working as a team member to support her community.
~ When a girl in middle school develops her online cookie store, through Digital Cookie, she finds the confidence that she has the skills to create something on her own.
~ When a girl in high school finally raises the funds to travel abroad, she discovers that she can take the lead in her own life and attain any goal she sets.
Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls not only discover their inner leadership potential but also use their earnings to power amazing experiences for themselves and their troop, including travel, outdoor adventure and (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programming.
Many girls put the money toward impactful community projects right in their own backyards, like supporting animal shelters and food banks.
All Girl Scouts are collecting donated boxes of cookies to give to the military! Customers can choose to donate $4 and a box of cookies will be given to Soldier’s Angels and Riverbend Troop Support to be shipped to military members and their families. When community members participate in the special military donation program, they are supporting local girls and our armed forces.
Proceeds from the Cookie Program stay local, meaning that when consumers purchase the delicious cookies from Girl Scouts, they’re giving back to their wider community.
Traditional flavors are $4/box and the S’mores cookies and gluten free Toffee-tastic cookies are $5/box.
To find Girl Scout cookies, visit www.girlscoutstoday.org or use the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, free on iOS and Android devices. Cookies will be available for purchase until March 24.
