H-W School Board approves calendar

CRESCO - The school calendar for 2019-2020 was presented to the public and approved by the Howard-Winneshiek school board on March 18.
Superintendent Ted Ihns noted the calendar is similar to the current year.
The state requires students attend classes for 1,080 hours per school year. For next year, there will be an extra 72.4 hours built into the schedule to allow for late starts, early dismissals and cancelled days due to weather and other unforseen events.
The hours break down to 536 for the first semester, which starts Friday, Aug. 23 and goes until winter break, Dec. 20. The second semester contains 616.4 hours and begins Jan. 3, 2020 and ends May 21, if snow days do not exceed built in hours.
Other important dates for students include an open house on Aug. 20; 2020 graduation on May 17; and student days off for holiday, vacation and teacher in-service days - Sept. 23, Oct. 21,  Nov. 8 and 27-29, Dec. 23-31, Jan. 1-2 and 20, Feb. 14, 17 and 21, March 16 and April 9-14.
