CRESCO - “Pretty Woman.” “In Dreams.” “Only the Lonely.” “Crying.” What do those songs have in common? Why Roy Orbison, of course! He recorded all those songs during his short life. He died at the age of 52 in 1988.
If you liked his rockabilly/ country and western style, come to a Roy Orbison Tribute at Cresco Theatre and Opera House on Sept. 18, when David K (originally from Eden Prairie, Minn.) will perform at 2 and 7 p.m.
Tickets can be ordered online at www.royshow.com, then go to calendar, or stop by the Cresco Welcome Center or get them from Wendy Lickteig at City Hall or the theatre. They are $25 general admission and $30 for VIP seats.
The singer wrote his first song when he was 11. “I sang at my first show when I was 9, in a fourth grade play. My dad was a minister and brought all these great albums, LPs home one day — “Jesus Christ Superstar, The Band, Johnny Cash, “The Beatles, Carole King… and when I heard those, the way they made me feel, I wanted to do whatever that was. Soon, at around 11 years old, I taught myself to play piano, guitar and bass guitar.”
David K traveled all over playing with different bands. “A couple years ago, I hit a high note at show while singing ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen. My drummer that night, who also does a Merle Haggard show, said, ‘You should do Roy.’ I went over to his house and tried [a wig and glasses] on, and it was immediate, like God wanted this to happen.”
David K sings Roy’s multi-octave range beautifully with ease and power and his band is exceptional. Hits from the early rockabilly 1960s through the 1970s movie hits like “In Dreams” from the film “Blue Velvet” and the iconic “Oh, Pretty Woman” from the movie of the same name, to hits covered by Linda Ronstadt like “Blue Bayou,” all the way through the Traveling Wilburys records recorded in the late 1980s with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne of ELO and George Harrison of The Beatles.
David K continued, “These are some of the best songs ever written, and we just wanna keep them alive, as well as Roy’s message about good friends, hard work and a strong faith, to especially get us through these tough times we’re all going through.”
