Inspire Day at Borlaug homes

RURAL CRESCO - It is only fitting that 10 years after the death of Dr. Norman Borlaug, a group of students from across the world visited his farm during Inspire Day on Sept. 20. He spent most of his life helping and showing others how to plant better crops.
Around 20 college students from two Chinese universities and one in Japan were able to join about 250 area fifth graders for Inspire Day at the Borlaug Farm, just northwest of Protivin.
Other schools attending were St. Teresa of Calcutta (Spillville), St. Joseph (New Hampton), Notre Dame, Crestwood, Riceville and South Winn.
The Dean and Associate Dean and other faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Science at ISU gave some of the sessions involving engineering, entomology, plant breeding and Borlaug’s work in Africa.
In addition, MiEnergy representatives gave information on farm electrical systems. Turkey Valley high school students helped throughout the day with the food packaging event and then gave some lessons on geocaching.
Everything went smoothly in the food-packaging barn at the Norman Borlaug birthplace. The goal has always been to package 10,000 meals, and this year it was accomplished! Another food-packaging event took place on Sunday at Crestwood High School.
During opening ceremonies at Beadle Park on Friday evening, Sept. 20, Tom Spindler of the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation told those gathered how important it is to feed the world. “When Norm was born in 1914, there was a population of 1.6 billion in the world. when he died, in 2009, it was 6.6 billion. Now there are 7.7 billion people in the world. That’s a lot of mouths to feed.”
