CRESCO - Leuthold’s Clothing is a name trusted in the area for great fashion, friendly service and value. A place where you come as a customer, but leave as a friend . . .
For the past 75 years Leuthold’s has been a part of Cresco’s downtown, offering a unique blend of women’s and men’s clothing, an assortment of accessories and additional services. The retail establishment has always kept up with trends by offering the latest styles and has embraced the community by welcoming old and new customers over that time.
Gorter Family Part
of Area for 3 Decades
Having started in Cresco in the year 1949 as a men’s clothing store, the Gorter family has owned the business since 1995, when Roy and Tammy Gorter made that initial investment, having been in the area for eight years prior.
Coming from the Okoboji area (Roy from Worthington, Minn. and Tammy from Spencer, Iowa), the couple saw a future in retail as business owners. Roy had been in clothing retail since high school and saw an opportunity.
The duo has since raised a family of three (now adult) boys––Benjamin, Joshua and Eli-–and continue to be that mainstay retail business customers have grown to love.
Leuthold’s History
The birth of Leuthold’s actually points back to Jacob Leuthold Jr. who started the first men’s clothing store in Kasson in 1878. The stores can actually trace their real beginning back further to a general store started by Jacob’s father, a Swiss immigrant, in a facility in Mantorville, MN. He eventually moved the business in 1965 to Kasson.
It was 13 years later when Jacob Leuthold Jr. changed the nature of the franchise and turned it into an exclusively men’s clothing shop––setting the foundation of Leuthold stores. As a young and ambiious man, the new owner believed in quality being the first element in economy and that quantity was the next factor; in essence, quality merchandise at a fair price.
Over the years, the Leuthold’s name grew, adding many stores throughout Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin, allowing managers to buy into the stores with the company. This allowed many entrepreneurs to get established and helped expand the organization.
