Peace Officer Memorial Day

A ceremony for fallen peace officers was held on Monday, May 16, with the official day being May 15.
Sheriff’s deputy Darwin Kueker can be seen raising the memorial flag to half staff as Sheriff Tim Beckman and other officers and the public watch. Pastor Tim Sir gave the prayer.
Iowa lost seven officers in 2021. Trooper Theodore Benda (Iowa State Patrol) was from Waukon. He died on Oct. 20 from an automobile crash while on duty.
Sergeant James Smith of Independence died of gunfire on April 9.
Correctional Officer Robert McFarland and Corrections employee Lorena Schulte died of assault.
In addition, Richard Newkirk, Broderick Daye and Steven Reighard died of COVID-19.
