RHSHC welcomes women’s health specialist

CRESCO - Dr. Randall Bremner, a board certified gynecologist who has been practicing in Northeast Iowa for 34 years, joined the staff of the Cresco Medical Clinic and Regional Health Services of Howard County in January. His practice is focused exclusively on women’s health through all stages of a woman’s life.
Born in Cedar Falls, Bremner wasn’t sure what he wanted to do in life until he was a senior in high school. His father was a family physician, and the model he provided young Bremner really made an impact. He decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, and he’s never looked back.
Bremner graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1984. He did his residency in Grand Rapids, Mich., then returned to Northeast Iowa to join his father in a practice with 10 other doctors. After more than 20 years in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area, he joined the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah for six years before moving to Cresco, citing quality of care and innovative leadership as primary factors in his decision to join Regional Health Services of Howard County.
“I love it here,” Bremner said. “The staff is friendly and personable. They know what they do well, and they do it really, really well.”
Dr. Bremner understands the challenges of seeking specialist healthcare in a rural area. One of his primary goals is to offer high quality specialty services so people don’t have to travel so far. From infertility, incontinence and brittle bone problems to birth control, pelvic pain and intimacy concerns, he treats a wide variety of health issues, all of them focused on women.
Women live longer than men and their bodies are constantly changing, Bremner points out. From puberty through the reproductive years to elder care, each phase is different and requires different care.
Moreover, “a lot of women neglect their own personal health as they prioritize the needs of the rest of the family,” Bremner said in an interview with KCZQ . “If we can bring the care close to home, they can pop in, get the problem taken care of and get back to the rest of their life.”
Convenient, easy access to quality healthcare is high on Bremner’s list of life necessities. This includes tele-health visits when appropriate, particularly for follow-up appointments. “There’s a huge need in this part of the state, in Northeast Iowa, for more access to women’s healthcare,” Bremner said. “My estimate is that there’s probably 40 to 45 thousand women in this part of the state who just don’t have ready access to specialty women’s healthcare. So it’s a tremendously under-served area.”
Other priorities of Bremner’s practice include the importance of being empathetic and really listening to the patient. “Lowering the barriers to health care,” as Bremner puts it, “so that it’s not such an intimidating thing to get the health care you need, specific for a woman’s health.”
