CRESCO - From the moment Sheila Slifka stepped into kindergarten, she felt a deep calling to become a teacher. Growing up in a bustling household in Oak Park, Illinois, Sheila was surrounded by the lively chaos of a large family. Her older brother played a significant role in shaping her dedication to education, instilling in her the importance of never missing a day of school. For Sheila, the motivation was not just about attendance; it was the promise of two coveted tickets to a White Sox game if she achieved perfect attendance.
In 1983, Sheila proudly earned her Bachelor's degree in Science and with an emphasis in Special Education, a significant milestone that marked the beginning of her professional journey. Soon after graduation, she and her college roommate landed jobs teaching at the same Catholic school in Adams,MN, a stroke of luck that thrilled them both. Eager and excited to make their mark, they even took the initiative to paint their classrooms themselves, a testament to their enthusiasm for teaching and creating welcoming environments for their future students. Their shared joy encapsulated the essence of their early career days.
A pivotal moment arrived for Sheila while she was riding a bus one day. There, she met her soulmate, Steve, and what began as a simple encounter blossomed into a heartfelt romance, punctuated by the exchange of countless letters. In 1985, they celebrated their love with a beautiful wedding and soon made their home in Cresco. The couple welcomed four wonderful children into their lives, further enriching Sheila's journey. And now Sheila even has five grandchildren.
Initially, Sheila taught at Holy Trinity Catholic School in Protivin, where she embraced her passion for education and nurturing young minds. However, as her family grew, she sought opportunities closer to home and eventually secured a position at Notre Dame Catholic School in Cresco. For the past 37 years, Sheila has dedicated herself to teaching second grade, a role that has brought her immense fulfillment and joy. She even taught her own children there, and her husband would come to parent-teacher conferences, addressing her as Mrs. Slifka, which is also what their children called her at school. The classroom has become a second home for Sheila, where she fosters a love for learning in her students.
Teaching has always been one of Sheila's greatest joys, intricately connected to her deep love for her family. However, her life took a heart-wrenching turn in 2021 when her husband received a cancer diagnosis. This difficult journey brought with it a host of challenges, yet amid the turmoil, Sheila found herself uplifted by the incredible support from her colleagues, students, and their parents. "Everyone was so kind and supportive during my husband's illness," she shared, reflecting on that time. "The compassion from the community allowed me to keep teaching and focus on my students, even in such a tough moment." Tragically, Steve passed away, but Sheila was not alone in her grief. The warmth and support she received from those around her provided a vital lifeline during such a profound loss.
In addition to her teaching, Sheila takes great joy in mentoring new and aspiring teachers and sharing her extensive knowledge and experiences. "I have even had the opportunity to mentor a former student who sat in my classroom years ago," she remarked, emphasizing the full circle of her teaching career. Outside of her professional life, Sheila cherishes the quality time she spends with her family, creating lasting memories and strong bonds.
She does not see herself retiring anytime soon, as her principal, Katie Schmitt, keeps her enthusiastic about teaching for many more years to come.
Sheila feels both humbled and excited by the recognition of her dedication and hard work, especially regarding her nomination and win. Her journey showcases her steadfast commitment to education, her family, her community, and her faith. She would like to express her gratitude to the kind person who nominated her.
Congratulations on your fantastic win, Sheila! You've truly earned it and are an inspiration to us all.
