Still teaching dance during pandemic

Cresco - Kelli Gosch teaches Just for Kix dance classes. Due to the closure of fitness centers because of the coronavirus, she can’t have classes. 

But . . . she likes teaching, and the kids like learning. She noted other Just for Kix instructors are having virtual classes. Gosch wasn’t sure what to do; then two of her students went on a walk by her house and called to see if she was home. They talked for 15 minutes. She was happy, and the girls enjoyed seeing their teacher.

That gave Gosch an idea. “I thought maybe I could give one-on-one training. I could go to their house and teach for a while.”

She has private lessons for 15-20 minutes outside the dancer(s) home or in the garage during inclement weather. Some dancers aren’t available during the day, “so we have a concert/session on Wednesday and Thursday nights at my house. I let all my neighbors know I was going to play loud music for about half-an-hour those days.” The first night, many walkers-by stopped to watch the show!

When Gosch gets to her students’ homes, she washes her hands from a hand-washing station in her van, and then the fun begins. April 1 was the first day, and the teacher and students had a great time.

“Some pay attention while they are dancing; others wander off, but it is fun,” Gosch said. 

The end of April is the end of the session. Gosch plans to have a spring show in May.

“You gotta think of fun things to do to keep going and to keep your sanity through this COVID time,” she said. “The kids just want to talk, too. I keep my kids in the house, so anything different is fun for everyone.”

Gosch has students in Lime Springs, Chester and Schley as well, where she will be traveling during the week. The distraction is good for the students and the teacher alike.
