Upper Iowa Ag a seed ‘growing’ business

CRESCO - When a company grows, it’s really something to see.  But when a company that produces seed grows, now that’s really something to see!
Having owned and operated Upper Iowa Ag for the past three years, Steve Mahr, with his wife Brooke, have seen nice, steady growth in their business, allowing for a huge addition to their operation.  The facility, located on the east edge of Cresco, recently added warehouse space to thier Pioneer buildings, accommodating for storage and space to treat soybeans.  They also added numerous offices and a break room.
“It turned into a larger project than first anticipated, but it really worked out well in the end,” said Steve Mahr, who saw the entire old buildings change completely. “We first took down the old Pioneer office, which was the old hog-buying station of the past and just a little building. We then had to take down a small part of the old warehouse to make the buildings work better together, maximizing space and work flow.”
He stated they are currently in Phase 3 as the offices have yet to be completed, but should be finished by the end of the year.
They now have a heated warehouse area with equipment to treat soybeans, while also having easy access to cold storage areas for loading and additional storage. All does seem to flow “very well” for the business. The heated area has a tall ceiling, allowing them to stack crates of seed three high with a forklift and enough room to easily transport beans to the equipment for treatment.
The couple recently held an Open House and Chamber Ribbon Cutting where a nice crowd attended the event to launch the new additions. They served hamburgers, chips and refreshments at the celebration.
Since that time, Upper Iowa Ag has stayed plenty busy dropping off seed at local farms throughout the area, specializing in treated soybeans and in Pioneer seed corn and more.
Steve Mahr has a history in the seed business with plenty of knowledge in the treatment of seed, having worked in research and later in sales at Monsanto.
