What do classes at H-W look like for rest of April?

HOWARD-WINNESHIEK CSD DISTRICT - Updates regarding the closure of our schools.

• How long is the extended school closure?
During Governor Reynold’s new conference yesterday she ordered all Iowa School Districts to be closed until Thursday, April 30, 2020.
• Will Howard-Winneshiek Community Schools be required to make up the time missed?
Because the District would be providing voluntary educational opportunities which have been approved by the Iowa Department of Education this meets the requirements of fulfilling hours lost due to the extended closure. While these activities aren’t “required learning,” we strongly encourage parents, families,  and other caregivers to support participation while students are at home.
• What is Voluntary Educational Enrichment Opportunities?
The educational enrichment approach to continuous learning includes those activities that are provided to students and families while the district is closed. This may include packets, teleconferencing, online instruction, or other outreach activities. Student participation is voluntary and no grading or credit is given.
• Will the district continue providing meals for students?
Yes, Howard-Winneshiek will continue to provide meals for students in our community. However, starting Wednesday, April 15th pickup of meals will only be on Wednesdays. Each student will receive 5 days worth of breakfast and lunch. The pickup time will be from 11:30 am-12:30 pm at the sites currently being used.
Food Service will be following the 2019-20 calendar and will not be providing meals on April 9, 10, 13 &14.
• What is the situation regarding school activities?
All spring activities sponsored by the state of Iowa involving sports, music and speech and any  activities involving Howard-Winneshiek Community Schools will either be postponed or cancelled during this extended closure.
• When and where can Seniors pick up their graduation items?
Josten’s will be at Crestwood High School on Tuesday, April 7 for a drive thru delivery of Senior’s graduation items. We ask that everyone stay in their vehicles, drive up to the Josten’s representative and they will give you your cap  & gown along with any other graduation items.
As we receive updated guidance on educational procedures and precautionary measures our plan is to provide regular and timely updates to students, families and our community as the situation allows.
Sincerely,  Ted Ihns
Superintendent of HWCSD
