Alvina Mary was born on March 19, 1927, the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Kuennen) Kriener, on the family farm near St. Lucas, Iowa. She was the oldest child, having three sisters and two brothers. She attended St. Luke’s Catholic School in St. Lucas. After completing her education, Alvina cared for her younger siblings and farm families nearby. The couple welcomed four children, Judy, Russell, Kevin and Juley. Together they farmed near Protivin, Iowa and New Hampton until they purchased a farm near Lourdes, Iowa, finally retiring in 1985. They remained on the farm until they returned to New Hampton in 2000.
Alvina was an active member of Holy Family Parish in New Hampton, officer and active member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Society, Merry Makers Club, Happy Hooker Crochet Club and Farm Bureau. Since July 1992, the couple began the tradition of vacationing with their entire family, which included making doughnuts, crafting, playing unlimited card games and being honored on the Mother’s Wall at the Mary, Mother of Church Shrine in Laurie, Mo.
