Betty Jean Taylor was born on Jan. 27, 1934, to Albert and Evaline (Schmauss) Taylor in Howard County, Iowa. She graduated in 1952 from Cresco High School. She met Kenneth Shea at a young age. On Dec. 31, 1953, the couple was united in marriage. To this union, six children were born.
Betty’s main priority in life was caring for her family and friends. She loved to feed her loved ones and always made sure they had a bed to sleep in. Her passion of caretaking led to a lifetime of cooking, cleaning, gardening and canning. Over the years, she helped her mother and aunt with painting, wall papering and house cleaning. Together, the three of them redesigned the interiors of many homes around the countryside.
Betty spent years organizing church activities, volunteering at Country Winds Manor and the Patty Elwood Center. For several years, she held a position in the ARC of Howard County, ending her position as the office president.
Betty was a very giving woman, and she was always willing to lend her time to help another person. She will be remembered for the care she gave to “her elderly shut-ins,” who she cleaned and grocery shopped for. Her elderly friends held a special place in Betty’s heart. She enjoyed sitting and chatting with her friends about everything and anything. In her spare time, she liked to play 500 with a local card club. She joined the local farmwives at Chat & Do Club.
