CRESCO - Delores M. Vsetecka, age 92, of Cresco, Iowa, died on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Mayo Clinic-St. Marys Campus in Rochester, Minn.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial took place at Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
Delores Mae Vsetecka was born on Feb. 16, 1929, in Sumner Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Ludmilla (Voyek) Vsetecka and raised on a farm southeast of Protivin, Iowa. She was baptized at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. It was also there that she made her First Communion and Confirmation.
Delores attended country school near her home, as well as the parochial school in Protivin, and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in 1947. She earned her Teaching Certificate from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa and taught in the country schools of Winneshiek County for five years.
On Oct. 22, 1951, Delores was united in marriage to Raphael Vsetecka at Holy Trinity Parish. They lived in the country, between Protivin and Jackson Junction for a year, and in December 1952, they moved to their farm near Cresco, where they resided until the time of Ray’s death. Delores then moved to her home in Cresco, where she lived for the past five years.
She was a gentle, loving mother who strived to give her children the best, while also raising them to be hard-working, independent and faithful beings; prayer and church were very important to her. Throughout the years, she was a volunteer at Notre Dame Parish and supported the school.
With her strength, she truly was the glue binding her large family. She enjoyed family gatherings and loved farm life. Delores was also a woman of many talents, including bread baking – especially Czech breads, kolaches and rolicky. Another talent of hers was piano, which she started playing as a young girl. She could listen to a song and play it right back by ear. She would play any chance she got, whether it be at her house, the rest home or an area meal site.
She and Ray loved to dance and gather with friends and neighbors. They enjoyed traveling to see her sister, who lived in Sparks, Nev. and took a memorable trip to the Czech Republic.
Delores is survived by her children, Donna (Mike) Miller of Cresco, Quentin (Darlene) Vsetecka of Cresco, Teresa (Robert) Uhlenhake of Ossian, Iowa, Anita (Rick) Richard of Monona, Iowa, Lori (Rod) Freidhof of Cresco, Denise (Bryan) Sheehy of Cresco and Rod (Rachel) Vsetecka of Cresco; son-in-law, Mark Carolan of Ridgeway, Iowa; grandchildren, Shelley (Casey) Kettmann, Robert Miller, Holly (Ryan) Manske, Danielle (Ted) Treise, Jenna (Lee Hardersen) Vsetecka, Andie (Cass) Fox, Austin (Laura) Vsetecka, Wendy (Daniel) Kuennen, Rob (LeAnn) Uhlenhake, Amber (Michael) Herbrand, Bryce (Elizabeth) Uhlenhake, Lindsey (Brock) Sorensen, Julie Carolan, Eric (Alisha Andera) Carolan, Nicholas Freidhof, Leigh (Matt) Dietzenbach, Kate Sheehy, Hannah Sheehy, Meredith Sheehy, Danica Vsetecka and Derek Vsetecka; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Adam, Rayna, Lincoln, Brooksen, Max, Kade, Addisen, Parker, Kashten, Kaylee, Brantley, Kora, Maeve, Asher, Beckett, Calvin and Baby Sorensen; brother-in-law, Alvin (Patricia) Vsetecka of Lawler, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Vsetecka of Lawler.
