Doris was born on July 6, 1933 on her parents’ farm northwest of Cresco, the daughter of Bernard Clement Ollendieck and Irma Mary Fritz. She attended Cresco Public School. Her senior year, she switched to Assumption High School. She enjoyed playing basketball and she was crowned basketball Queen.
After high school she was a waitress at Elms Café. On Oct. 8, 1952, she was united in marriage to Ronald Francis Ferrie at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco. Together, the couple made their home on the farm near Schley, Iowa. They lived on a few farms before settling on the home place of Ronald’s parents, and they lived there for many years, and he was the fourth generation Ferrie to have owned it. They both loved farming.
Ronald died on Dec. 30, 1998, and Doris lived on the farm for another year before she moved to town. She loved to dance to her polka music, no matter where she was. She always said her greatest accomplishment in life was her children. She loved them and her grandchildren and great-grandchilden very much and talked about them all the time.
Farming with her John Deere, chatting with the neighbors, and playing cards with her friends were also some of Doris’s favorite things to do.
Doris kept busy while living in town with Church Council; volunteering at the hospital, Howard County Residential Care/Country Winds Manor, VFW, Legion Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels and Hospice; was a member of the Historical Society, Cresco Chamber and School Board; was Past President of Altar Rosary Society; and counted money at church. For several years, she worked at Notre Dame Grade School Lunch Program.
Her favorite saying was “That’s just the way it is.”
Doris is survived by her son, William (Charleen) Ferrie of Spring Valley, Minn., and their children, Christy (Tim), Lauri (Rob), Adam (Jacie) and Jason (Megan); her daughter, Sandra (Ronald) Sedam of Rock Island, Ill., and children, Graham (Christine), Megan (Justin) and Jessica (Tim); her son, Gary (Marti) Ferrie of Cresco, and children, Nick (Katie), Nathan (Lindsey), Tyler (Nic) and Amber (Jay); her son, Randy (Sheryl) Ferrie of Cresco, and children, Roland and Ramsey (Heather); her son, Kevin (Marcy) Ferrie of Hastings, Minn., and children, Nicole (Adam), Douglas (Meghan) and Kayla (Corey); her daughter, Sue (Marv) Schnur of Ridgeway, Iowa, and children, Torie (Tye), Travis (Katie) and Tanner (Sara); and son, Darin (Kathy) Ferrie of Cresco, and children, Brooklyn, Boston and Britain; along with 42 great-grandchildren
