Independence - James Judson “Judd” Toale, age 81, and Patricia Ann Toale, age 83, of Independence, Iowa, died moments apart, of natural causes on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018.
Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 22, 2018, at St. John Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. David M. Beckman and Rev. Msgr. Thomas E. Toale as concelebrants. Burial was in the church cemetery. Military Rites, for Judd, were conducted by Sheehan – Tidball American Legion Post #30 and Bechter – Boies VFW Post #2440.
James Judson “Judd” Toale was born Aug. 29, 1936, in Independence, the son of Peter James Toale and Grace (Short) Toale. He graduated from St. John Catholic High School with the class of 1954 and served in the U.S. Marines from 1954 to 1956. He was stationed at Parris Island in South Carolina before he moved back to Independence and worked at John Deere. He was handy and liked to do his own auto repairs and always had a home improvement project in the works.
Patricia Ann Meaney was born Nov. 3, 1934, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of John Thomas Meaney and Mary Ellen (Considine) Meaney. Her family moved to Madison, Wis., where she graduated from high school in 1952. She returned to the Waterloo, Iowa area, where she attended business school and modeled for the J.C. Penney Company. She also worked as a loan officer at Home Savings & Loans in Waterloo.
Judd and Pat were united in marriage on July 18, 1959, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. The couple made their home in rural Waterloo, before moving back to Independence in 1968. 
Judd was a machinist at John Deere Engine Works until his retirement in 1994. In his retirement, he liked to design and build houses. Pat worked at the Independence Bulletin Journal and was lead secretary for the Independence Chief of Police until her retirement in 1996.
The couple enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, playing cards and spending time entertaining with family and friends. The couple also loved spending time on the golf course and visiting casinos.
Judd and Pat were members of St. John Catholic Church in Independence, where Pat was active in the Rosary Society. Judd was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #4332 and Catholic Order of Foresters Court #1314. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Judd and Pat are lovingly remembered by two sons, Thomas (Linda Murphy) Toale of Waterloo and Michael (Angela) Toale of Cresco, Iowa, and their children, Madeline and Catherine; one daughter, Michelle (Robert) Burke of Independence and their children, Joseph Burke and Jessica Burke; Pat’s two brothers, John “Bud” Meaney of Waterloo and Martin T. (Joyce) Meaney of Peosta, Iowa; and their sister-in-law, Roseann Toale of Independence.
They were preceded by Judd’s parents; Pat’s parents; one son, Timothy John Toale; Judd’s brother, John “Jack” Toale; his two sisters, Helen Hodges and Shirley Ryan; and Pat’s sister, Helen Hild.
Memorials will be directed to the church and Cedar Valley Hospice. White Funeral Home, Independ-ence was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.White-MtHope.com.
