Raymond Murray, 90

 

Cresco -  Raymond Francis Murray, age 90, of Cresco, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco. 
Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 3, 2017 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, with burial in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Arrangements by Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home.
Raymond Murray was born Oct. 3, 1926 to Raymond and Margaret (Coughlin) Murray in Lawler, Iowa. He attended grade school at St. Joseph’s and graduated from Cresco High School in 1944, where he was president of his senior class. 
He married Mary Lou Henkes on Aug. 9, 1954 at St. Joseph’s in Cresco. This past August they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. The couple had four children.
Following graduation, Raymond served in the U.S. Army,  with the Army Occupation in Japan from 1945-1946. Ray held the rank of Sergeant in Supply. 
He was later employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. Raymond was a lifelong member of Notre Dame Parish and was a member of the American Legion for 71 years.
He participated in football, wrestling and baseball in high school and played baseball on the Cresco town baseball team. Throughout his life Raymond was an enthusiastic Crestwood sports team fan. He was a devoted Packers fan and enjoyed fishing locally and in Canada with family and friends. After he retired, Raymond loved spending his free time playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou;  daughter, Nancy Murray of Omaha, Neb.; son, William “Bill” (Diane) Murray of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter, Barbara “Barb” Murray of Bloomington, Ind.; daughter, Margaret (Ken) Funke of Dubuque, Iowa; sister, Margaret Ann (Ron) Law of Ankeny, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Joan Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., Marilee Murray of Phoenix, Ariz., Connie Murray of Davenport, Iowa, Marcella Kuene of Cresco and JoAnne (Merlin) Kratz of Cresco; grandchildren, Izaak (Gillian) Murray, Elizabeth Murray, Erik Murray, Nolan (Anne) Funke, Nathan Funke, Ellen Funke and Owen Funke; and great-grandchildren, Peter Funke and Dallas Murray.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elizabeth (Art) Nixa; brothers Tom (Elaine) Murray, Bob Murray, John Murray, Ed Murray and Hank Murray; and brother-in-law, Dale Kuene.
