CRESCO - Roger Wentworth, age 93, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2023 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Visitation will be held at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. and again one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday morning. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Roger William Wentworth was born on Aug. 11, 1929 in Cresco, to Arthur and Lydia (Weber) Wentworth. He grew up in Cresco and graduated from Cresco High School in 1947.
Following graduation, he went to work for Hawkeye Tri-County Rural Electric Co-op. In 1951 Roger enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, which included a bronze star, and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
After his discharge, he returned to work at Hawkeye Tri County Co-op as a billing clerk. He retired as the office manager in 1994.
Roger married Lorrine Hoppe on Feb. 14, 1958 in Spring Valley, Minn. To this union, two sons were born, Allan and James.
Roger enjoyed going to local sporting events, as well as the Drake Relays and the Colonial Golf Tournament. He was an avid Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers fan. He liked camping, bowling and golfing. He was a member of the Cresco Country Club for 50 years. He scored a hole-in-one on Sept. 26, 1968 on the 8th hole. He was also a 70-year member of the American Legion.
Roger is survived by his son, Allan Wentworth of Pecos, Texas; sister, Hazel (Bill) Walker of Cresco; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Survivors also include his sisters-in-law, Joan Hoppe of Cresco and LaVonne (Kenneth) Fishell of Cummings, Ga.; brother-in-law, Wayne Roberts of Farmington, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews; and special family member (daughter-in-law), Janice Wentworth.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorrine; son, James Wentworth; daughter-in-law, Norma Wentworth; siblings, Floyd (Alma) Wentworth, Mary (Robert) Walton, Dorothy Slifka, Betty (Elmer) Farghum, Helen Fuller, Gene Wentworth and Eleanor (Danny) Tupy; brothers-in-law, Earl Hoppe and Gene Hoppe; sisters-in-law, Rita Hoppe and LaVene Roberts; and nephews, David and Jeff Hoppe, Daryl Fuller, Dean Tupy and James Walton.
