PROTIVIN - Ronald “Ron” “Moe” Novotny, age 72, died on May 7, 2022 at his home in Harlan, Iowa. 
A memorial was held there in May to celebrate his life.
The family and friends of Ron “Moe” Novotny will be gathering to celebrate his life in his hometown of Protivin, Iowa at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, July 16, 2022.
There will be visitation at the church from 10-11 a.m., followed by a short service and burial before lunch at The Mint at noon.
Ron was born in Cresco, Iowa on June 11, 1949, and grew up in Protivin playing baseball, basketball and fast-pitch softball while attending Holy Trinity and Rudolphinum. He graduated in 1967. He was a member of three Protivin teams that qualified for the state fast-pitch tournament. He was a bat boy, player and manager during his fast-pitch days in Protivin and was always better known during that time by his nickname “Moe.”
He received a Radio-Television broadcasting degree from Brown College in Minneapolis in 1968. He spent 53 years in broadcasting, starting out at KWAY in Waverly, Iowa in 1968 before moving on to KNOD in Harlan in 1985. He was the play-by-play voice of numerous state tournament games, including several Harlan State Championships. In southwest Iowa during his 35 years there, he became known as a “broadcasting legend.” He retired in December 2021.
He is survived by three sisters and a brother, including Pat Sir of Lourdes, Iowa and son, Tom; Linda (Don) Baltes of Rochester, Minn., along with children, Brian, Steve, Amy and Ashley; Randy (Pamela) Novotny of Protivin and children, Missy, Meagan and Michael; and Sue (Len) Cutsforth of Lawler, Iowa and sons, Chad and Troy. He also had 11 great-nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends in northeast and southwest Iowa.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Ernie of Protivin; brother, Mike of Naples, Fla.; brother-in-law, Adolph Sir of Lourdes; and a great-niece, Cora Sobolik of New Hampton.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Protivin Little League, Trinity School, or the Protivin Fire Department.
