CRESCO - Sara Read, age 93, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Dec. 12, 2020 at Regional Health Services of Howard County. 

Sara’s wishes were to be cremated and buried near her parents in Logan, Iowa. There will be no funeral services.

She was born on Aug. 5, 1927 in Logan, the daughter of James and Alma Read. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines, Iowa and Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, with a science degree. 

In her early career, she was a systems analyst for a printing company in Des Moines. Most of her business career was spent as a computer and communications executive for the Pillsbury Company in Minneapolis, Minn. 

After retirement, Sara moved to Cresco, the hometown of her friend Doris McIntire. Together, they refurbished an older house on Elm Street. Sara loved to travel and visited all of the U.S. presidential libraries. She also served multiple terms as mayor of Cresco, where her main objective was to enhance cooperation between government, business and residential communities. Sara also served on the finance committee of the Cresco Railway Company during the train restoration project.

Sara is survived by her sister, Millicent Wiese of Manning, Iowa and her brother, Jay Read of Green Valley, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Alma Read; her brother, James Read Jr.; and her dear friend, Doris McIntire.
