Shirley was born on May 20, 1950, to Dale and Lucille (VanDerHeyden) Kruse in Cresco. She attended and graduated from Crestwood High School and went on to school to receive her associate’s degree. On July 1, 1967, she was united in marriage to Tom Beck at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Chester, Iowa. Together they had five children, LeAnn, Brad, Jody, Marty and Matt. They were later separated. Shirley was married Robert “Bob” McCarville Sr., who passed away on Jan. 26, 2019.
When she was first married to Tom, Shirley ran an upholstery and purse-making business in Lime Springs, Iowa and then moved her business out to their farm. In 1984, she went to work for Sara Lee in New Hampton, Iowa until 2000. After it closed, she went back to school to become a medical transcriptionist. In 2001, she began her new career for Mayo Clinic and retired in 2018.
Shirley was a very active lady. She was known for not being able to sit still very long. After her retirement, she took a job at Sweet’s Motel in LeRoy to fill her time. She kept a meticulous home, yard, flower beds and garden. She had a bright green thumb and could make anything grow. In her leisure time, Shirley kept her hands busy by crocheting afghans for her family.
