A private family memorial Mass will be held at the Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco with Fr. Jacob Rouse officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cresco. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required and social distancing will be practiced.
Tillie Helen Sobolik was born on April 27, 1924, to Albert and Agnes (Markovetz) Sobolik. She attended rural school and graduated from Cresco High School in 1942. On Aug. 27, 1945, she was united in marriage to Charles DeWalle at Assumption Church in Cresco. They farmed in Howard and Winneshiek (where Tillie was born) Counties, until they retired and moved to Cresco in November 1990. The couple worked side-by-side on the farm, milking and working the ground. She was very much a farmer’s wife and expected everyone to keep up with her.
Tillie was very family-oriented. She was always there for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to grow huge vegetable gardens and enjoyed spending time in her garden, canning and sharing garden produce with family and friends.
Tillie and Charles were avid dancers, especially square dancing. They played many hands of 500 and Euchre and traveled to all 50 states and to Europe. She made it to Alaska twice and enjoyed a bank trip to the Czech Republic with Denny. Tillie spent many hours searching Sobolik and DeWalle genealogy. She loved to cook huge meals for her family, cooked at Assumption Catholic School and volunteered at the Senior Citizens meal site. She kept her hands busy crocheting prayer shawls for Notre Dame Church. The last items she crocheted were three baby blankets for her granddaughter Lindsay.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Jim) Sobolik of Cresco and their children, Christopher (Lurleen) Sobolik and their children, Madeline and Mitchell of Cumming, Iowa; Jason (Amy) Sobolik and their children, Peter, Ava, Jonathan and Luke of LaCrosse, Wis.; son, Dennis (Mary) DeWalle of Redlands, Calif. and their daughter Emily Anderson of Redlands, and daughter, Linda (Steven) Middlebrook of Cresco and their children, Lindsay (Chris) Marti of Seattle, Wash. and Drew Middlebrook of Fargo, N.D.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles on May 23, 2014; sister, Helen, who died in infancy; also many aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Howard County Community Hospice, 235 8th Ave. W., Cresco, IA 52136 or Bohemian National Cemetery, 24387 180th St. Cresco, IA 52136.
