Crestwood boy cagers tame MFL-MM Bulldogs

CRESCO - A fast start on offense helped the Crestwood varsity boys’ basketball team build an 18-point first quarter lead as the Cadets cruised to a 71-28 win over MFL-Mar-Mac on Dec. 21 at home to improve their record to 3-3.
Crestwood went on a 14-0 run to open the game before taking a 25-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cadets went on a 23-6 run in the second period to push their lead to 48-13 at halftime. Crestwood extended its lead to 60-20 going into the fourth period.
Cadet Head Coach Lynn McCormick said the defense sparked the offense against the Bulldogs.
“We forced some turnovers by MFL, and our defense really played well,” the coach said. “We made some early baskets (to build a big lead), and we didn’t turn the ball over much.
“After the past few games, we talked about getting off to a good start and we did that against MFL. We also attacked the basket well on offense, and we hit a few three-pointers, which also helps. Our guys did a good job on the boards by rebounding well, and we got the ball where we needed to on offense,” McCormick said.
Clayton Ollendieck led the Cadets with 17 points, had seven rebounds and three assists. Nathan Martinek tallied 12 points, including four three-pointers, and two assists. Carter Henry had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Jacob Andera tallied eight points, including one three-pointer, had three steals and two assists. Boston Ferrie had eight points and 10 rebounds. Jon Henry, Kristian Szajna and Shane Vokaty each scored four points. Jon Henry had four rebounds and four assists. Dalton Scheidel had two points.
The Cadets will play at New Hampton on Jan 2, will host Waverly-Shell Rock on Jan. 5, and they will play Gladbrook-Reinbeck at Wartburg on Jan. 6. Crestwood will play at Decorah on Jan. 9.
