Crestwood boys lose to Vikings, Indians; drop two versus Oelwein

CRESCO - A rough start to the game against Decorah on June 11 hurt the Crestwood baseball team as the Cadets lost to the Vikings, 0-10, in six innings.
Playing a home doubleheader against Waukon on June 13, the Cadets were gamers in both contests, but they came up short, 4-5 and 0-2.
Facing off against Oelwein on June 15, the Cadets lost 3-7 in a game that was suspended from May 25, and they fell to Oelwein, 0-10, in five innings in the second game.

Decorah 10, Cadets 0
Decorah jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on its way to a 10-0 win over the Cadets in six innings on June 11.
The Vikings plated four runs in the first, four in the second and added two runs in the sixth.
“Decorah has a solid team,” Cadet Coach Gary Steffen said. “We were a little bit out-matched against them. Decorah pounded the ball at the plate. It’s tough to come back after you get down by eight runs after two innings.
“On the positive side, we settled down after the second inning. Our guys are getting more game experience, which will pay off in the long run,” Steffen said.
Crestwood tallied only two hits. Frank Hrdlicka and Reid Wiley both had one single. Colter Bye had one stolen base.
Gabe Grabau was the losing pitcher. He went one and one-third innings, allowed nine hits, eight earned runs and two walks. Matthew Slifka went four and one-third innings, allowed three hits, two earned runs and struck out three.

In game two, the Indians scored two runs in the top of the fifth and held on to beat the Cadets, 2-0.
“This game was there for us take, but we struggled at the plate,” Steffen said. “We swung at too many pitches, and we made it easy for Waukon. When we did hit the ball, we hit it right at Waukon.
“One of the positives from this game was the pitching of Carter Henry. He tossed one of his best games of the year. In both games, if we had one or two plays go our way, we could have won both games. After both games, I told our guys we need to put the losses behind us and move on to the next game,” Steffen said.
