Crestwood boys nipped by New Hampton, bounce Oelwein

Facing Oelwein on the road on Feb. 9, the Cadets took advantage of solid shooting to beat the Huskies, 62-52, to snap a six-game losing streak.

The Cadets were unable to hold on to a 10-point lead in the third period as New Hampton rallied late to win, 59-51.
The Chickasaws snagged a 16-7 lead after one period before the Cadets went on a 20-10 run in the second quarter to take a 27-26 edge at halftime.
In the third period, two buckets each by Clayton Ollendieck and Zack Lane gave the Cadets a 37-27 lead at the 4:53 mark. However, New Hampton came back with a 9-4 run to cut Crestwood’s lead to 41-36 going into the fourth.
In the final period, the Cadets struggled from the field as they hit only three field goals in the final eight minutes. New Hampton went on an 11-2 run to take a 48-43 lead with four minutes left. Three-pointers by Kristian Szajna and Nathan Martinek and a two-pointer by Jacob Andera cut NH’s lead to 55-51 with 25 seconds left, but the Cadets couldn’t get closer.
“We had a 10-point lead in the third, but after that, we didn’t take good shots, and we turned the ball over,” Cadet Coach Lynn McCormick said. “We also didn’t make many shots (late in the game). We missed a few shot opportunities, and New Hampton made their shots.
“New Hampton was a hard matchup for us going man-to-man on defense because they are so quick. They also hit some three-pointers. However, we did battle hard and we did some good things. We just need to try to finish the season strong,” the coach said.
