Crestwood girls’ team falls to Denver, Waterloo West

CRESCO - The Crestwood varsity girls’ basketball team competed hard in their first two contests of the season before losing both games.
Crestwood fell to Denver, 42-45, on Dec. 2 in the season opener on the road. Facing Waterloo West at home on Dec. 3, the Cadets kept the score close early before the Wahawks pulled away late for a 68-53 win.
Denver 45, Cadets 42
The Cyclones took a 16-8 lead after one period and led the Cadets, 27-19, at halftime. Denver led 34-30 after three periods.
“Against Denver we had a slow start to the game offensively with Denver actually taking a 27-14 lead midway through the 2nd quarter before we cut the lead to 8 before halftime,” Crestwood Girls’ Head Coach Dale Dennler said. “The Cadets kept fighting in the second half and took a one-point lead towards the end of the third quarter.
“The score remained close the rest of the game with Denver holding on for the threepoint win. I thought our defense did a good job of making them uncomfortable, which allowed us to get back into the game. We settled down on offense and got some better shots after the first quarter,” Dennler said.
Mea Shelton led the Cadets with 12 points, including three three-pointers, had two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Charley Curtis had 11 points, including two three-pointers, had three rebounds and two steals. Lydia Williams had five points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block.
Blaire Cummings had four points, four assists and one rebound. Zoey Mehmert had four points, seven rebounds and one steal. Erica Ollendick had three points, five rebounds and two assists. Korey Hrdlicka had two points, four rebounds and one assist. Ella Bergan had one point and four rebounds.

Waterloo West 68, Cadets 53
Squaring off against a stout Waterloo West team on Dec. 3 at home, the Cadets kept the score close in the first half before the Wahawks took control in the second half to earn the 68-53 win.
“Taking on Waterloo West, we started even with them, but then had a tough second quarter, allowing them to jump to a 15 point lead at halftime,” Dennler said. “We continued to apply pressure and were able to cut the lead to eight toward the end of the game before West extended it by making free throws down the stretch.
“I was very pleased with our effort and ability to apply defensive pressure. We never gave up and came back on both of the teams in the second half.  A couple of things we need to work on is controlling our pace on offense.
“We want to push the ball, but then we need to take time to get a good shot and take advantage of mismatches we might have.  Defensively we need to make sure we are still protecting the basket even when we are pressing and rebounding,” the coach said.
Charley Curtis led the Cadets with 14 points, including one three-pointer, had four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Lydia Williams had 12 points and eight rebounds. Mea Shelton had eight points, including two three-pointers, six rebounds and four assists.
Zoey Mehmert had eight points, including two three-pointers, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists. Peyton Ullom had four points, three rebounds and two steals.
