Crestwood volleyball team falls to W-SR, places third at Kepros Invitational

CRESCO - The Class 4A No. 7 Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks were too strong for the Crestwood volleyball team on Tuesday, Sept. 10 as the Go-Hawks downed the Cadets in three games, 25-17, 25-7, 25-10. The rankings are from the IGHSAU.
Hosting the Kepros Invitational on Sept. 14, the Cadets placed third overall with four wins and two losses. Waterloo West was the overall champion.
In round robin play, Crestwood downed Clayton Ridge (21-18, 21-11); beat Lansing Kee (21-13, 21-19); downed North Fayette Valley (21-17, 21-12) and beat Waukon (21-13, 21-17). In tourney play, the Cadets lost to Class 3A No. 8 New Hampton (6-21, 8-21) and fell to Class 5A No. 14 Waterloo West (8-21, 15-21).

W-SR match
“Waverly-SR takes their volleyball seriously,” Cadet Coach Robin Gossman said. “They put a lot of time into what they are now. W-SR has a very high-powered offense and the defense is equally as good. The match did not start out well for us and that played a huge role in the outcome of the match.
“We found offense hard to come by. When we did get a big hit or a great serve W-SR was able to stop us from getting any momentum. Hopefully we can rebound (from this loss). The match is over and we need to be able to move on,” Gossman said.
In game one, W-SR took an early 4-0 lead before a sideout and two serves by Trystin Thompson cut the lead to 4-3. However, the Go-Hawks answered with a 5-2 run to go ahead 10-5. After two points by the Cadets, the Go-Hawks went on a 10-4 run to take a 20-11 lead. W-SR held off a late rally to earn the win.
In game two, the Go-Hawks raced to a 5-0 lead. A sideout and an ace by Emma Rissman made the score 5-2 before W-SR went on a 20-5 run to notch the victory.
Game three saw W-SR take a 6-0 lead. Two kills by Sharon Goodman cut the lead to 9-3, but the Cadets were unable to get any closer.
Cadet statistics

Sharon Goodman led the team with nine kills, had one block, one dig, completed six of seven serves and had one ace. Kaylee Ollendieck was eight of eight serving and had three digs. Laken Lienhard tallied 16 assists, had two digs and completed five of five serves.
Memphis Sweeney had five kills. Emma Rissman posted 12 digs, completed four of four serves and had one ace. Chloe Rice had two kills.

Kepros Invite
“Overall we had a good tournament,” Gossman said. “I am very satisfied with our play throughout the day. The only thing that I am dissatisfied with is our mental toughness. We showed strength by winning a couple very close sets, but when we got down to both New Hampton and eventual tournament champion, West Waterloo we lost our fight.
“We still need to learn that this game is made of runs, and your run will come if you are persistent. We are better than most of our girls believe. That will change as they get more and more experience. So far, our only losses have come to ranked teams. We have not lost a match that we should have won,” Gossman said.
