Five Crestwood runners nab NEIC cross country honors

WAVERLY - Three Crestwood girls and two boys placed in the top 15 at the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet on Oct. 9 at Waverly to earn All-NEIC honors.
Cadet senior Cassidy Ihns grabbed gold  in 20:10 seconds, Hope Dohlman was fourth in 21:13 and Annie Mast placed 11th in 22:19. In the varsity boys’ race, Justin Nibaur finished seventh in 18:53, and Nathan Martinek was 14th in 19:10.
The Crestwood varsity girls’ team finished third with 60 points, and the Cadet varsity boys’ team placed fourth with 94 points. Decorah won the team title in both varsity races.
In the Junior Varsity girls’ race, Madison Brace posted the highest finish for Crestwood as she took 19th in 25:15. Kyle Quam placed 30th for Crestwood in the JV boys’ race.
In the Junior High girls’ race, Olivia Ollendick took gold in 11:31. In the boys’ race, Dominic Bigalk placed ninth in a time of 11:15.
Crestwood Head Coach Jim Obermann said he was “extremely pleased” with the performance of all the Cadet harriers.
“This is as well as we’ve competed at the NEIC meet (in a long time),” Obermann noted. “All of our runners performed well in tough, wet conditions. Everyone really got after it at the meet.”
The coach was happy to see Cassidy Ihns, Hope Dohlman and Annie Mast nab All-NEIC honors in the varsity girls’ race.
“Cassidy led the race from start to finish, and she knew she could win it,” Obermann said. “Hope had her highest finish (at the NEIC meet), and she earned All-NEIC honors for the fourth straight year.
“Annie also ran a great race to earn conference honors. She continues to work hard, and she is a great competitor. Sarah Mashek, Libby Labosky and Rachel Steffen all ran great races. All our JV girls also ran hard together. I also give credit to all the varsity girls, who finished only 12 points behind first place Decorah.
The coach also congratulated the Cadet boys for running strong.
“Bryden Juelsgaard battled hard even though he had a side stitch,” Obermann said. “Overall, our boys ran well. Justin Nibaur ran his best race to earn All-NEIC honors, and Nathan Martinek ran strong to grab conference honors. Ethan Govern, who has also been a strong runner for us, had one of his best races, and Kendal Cotant ran well.
“In the JV boys’ race, Jon Millage and Kyle Quam ran strong races. In the Junior High girls’ race, it was great to see Olivia Ollendick place first, and we are proud of her. Overall, I was happy to see all the kids battle hard through the rain. I also appreciate the great fan support we had at the meet,” Obermann said.
