TV girl golfers down Central, Trojan boys lose

ELKADER - The Turkey Valley boys’ and girls’ golf teams earned a split against Central Elkader on May 4 as the TV girls’ downed Central, 237-267; and the Trojan boys’ team lost, 170-221.
Boys’ meet
Central defeated the Turkey Valley boys’ team, 170-221, Thursday.
“The TV boys got a glimpse of the course at which the UIC meet was contested on  Monday, May 8, which was a good thing,” TV Coach John Reicks said. “Despite playing short-handed, the Trojans shot two sub-50 rounds, which was a pretty decent score on the narrow, tree lined tough little course at Elkader.”
Simon Schmitt had a good day with the driver on his way to a 46 to lead the Trojans. Nathan Mueterthies (49) and Kelby Reicks (56) were paired together in the last regular season meet of the year. Other TV scores included: Gabe Hoffert 70, Jason Herold 73, Lucas Scheidel 91.
“Nathan and Kelby are close friends on and off the course,” Reicks said. “The two senior leaders both were wearing big smiles as they came off the course after an enjoyable round in gorgeous weather.”

Girls’ meet
The Trojan girls’ team defeated Central, 237-267, Thursday in Elkader.
Seniors Morgen Kuennen (53) and Abbey Ott (59) lead the Lady Trojans to their third win of the season. Morgen was runner-up medalist with a 53.
Freshman Jaedyn Winter also shot a  59, while  veteran Jenna Schmitt fashioned a 66. Kaci Rausch (69) and  freshman Savannah Schmitt (73) rounded out the varsity scorecard. A trio of promising ninth-graders Rachelle Smith (67), Reese Manderfield (74), and Lindsey Jackson (79) also battled their way on the tricky Elkader course.
“If these talented ninth graders continue to put in the  time and effort and stick together, they could be a very special group by the end of their high school careers,” Reicks said. “Morgen and Abbey were stellar tonight. Both of the girls are just in their second year of the sport.
“It is pretty amazing when you think about it. Golf has such a steep learning curve, more so than almost any other sport. I give a big thank you to my four seniors for all their efforts.
“We now turn our sights to the post-season, which included the UIC meet that was on May 8 with tournament play right around the corner,” Reicks said.
