Bridge projects in Howard County for 2023

HOWARD COUNTY - Nick Rissman, Howard County Engineer, gave an update on the 2023 projects being done by the road department.
“There are no paving projects this year. Although, they will be finishing up some intersection work in the Chester/ Lime Springs area.”
Bridges are being taken care of this summer.
In addition, he said the roads held up pretty good this winter. “It was a hard December, but January, February and March have been good to us.”
Contracted projects
AF42: This bridge is being replaced on B17 west of Elma, over the Wapsi. It will be started in June. The cost is $1,752,274 and will take 3-4 months.
This project is being paid for by the windmills. Rissman explained, “The windmills have helped our entire system dramatically. The funds from these are a huge benefit.”
P7: This bridge is northwest of Schley on 135th St., West of Robin Ave. Start time is set for June. This one is estimated to cost $592,830 and will take 2-3 months to finish.
This project is paid for with federal bridge funds.
In house bridge projects
Three projects will be done by the road crew. They include:
AL11: Located on Yankee Ave., south of 30th.
P11: Located west of Schley on Pine, north of A46.
H17: Located on Howard Ave., northeast of Elma, south of A46.
Grading projects
• Northeast of Johnson Farms in Lime Springs, on Lower Mill Road/Oak Ave.
• Fir Ave., between 162nd and 170th
• Elm Ave., between 170th and 180th
Highway 9 bridge
The state is replacing the bridge that goes over the North Branch of the Turkey River. It is located four miles west of Cresco and one-half mile east of the Schley turnoff.
Ron Loecher of Iowa DOT stated, “Weather permitting, we will start on April 3, 2023, ending in mid-October.”
The state detour will utilize county roads V46, A46 and V58. The contractor is Minnowa Construction from Harmony, Minn., with an estimated cost of $1,537,235.
