"From the outset, the expanded project was envisioned as a unified effort among Cresco churches"
CRESCO — What began as a single, meaningful woodworking project more than five years ago has grown into a powerful symbol of faith, craftsmanship, and unity among Cresco’s churches.
Immanuel Lutheran Church’s woodworking ministry, Hands of the Master, has completed a stunning community display featuring five large wooden shadow boxes depicting the “Road to Bethlehem.” The illuminated display is now prominently showcased at Beadle Park, welcoming residents and visitors traveling along one of Cresco’s main roads to pause and reflect on the miracle of Jesus’ birth.
The idea for the project has deep roots. The very first shadow box was created about five years ago for the Immanuel Lutheran Church, crafted from wood salvaged from the church’s old building sign dating back to the 1920s. That original piece sparked conversation and imagination about how the concept could grow into something larger and more inclusive.
That opportunity came when members of Hands of the Master spoke with Jason Passmore of the Cresco Chamber of Commerce about a community project. When the group suggested creating additional shadow boxes portraying the Road to Bethlehem, Passmore immediately recognized the impact such a display could have.
When asked about the project Passmore added, “The Chamber is always looking for better ways to showcase Cresco during the holiday. This idea for lighted shadow boxes in Beadle Park was a gret opportunity to partner on multiple levels.”
From the outset, the expanded project was envisioned as a unified effort among Cresco churches, with each congregation sponsoring one shadow box and two churches sharing the cost of the larger center box. Each display includes a plaque recognizing the sponsoring church, underscoring the cooperative spirit behind the work.
In total, six churches participated, resulting in the construction of five shadow boxes. Four of the boxes measure 4 feet high by 6 feet wide, while the centerpiece box stands 7 feet high by 8 feet wide, drawing the eye to the heart of the nativity story. Each box features metal-cut silhouettes illuminated by LED lighting outlining the edges, creating a striking and reverent nighttime display at Beadle Park. Each participating church donated $385 toward the project, covering much of the cost. Remaining expenses were generously covered by independent donors, reflecting the strong community support behind the effort.
The churches taking part include Community Chapel, First Congregational Church, First Lutheran Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Notre Dame Parish, and the Cresco Area United Methodist Churches.
Organizers say the display is about more than craftsmanship—it is a visible reminder of faith and unity.
“Our thought was how wonderful for our Cresco Churches to all unite and display the miracle of Jesus' birth on the main road in Cresco”, said Marti Ferrie of the Hands of the Master group.
Now shining at Beadle Park, the Road to Bethlehem stands as a testament to Cresco’s shared faith, generosity, and cooperation—illuminating both the Christmas story and the strength of community working together.
