CRESCO - The Cresco community celebrated Kelly and Donna Thomas as they were honored to serve as this year's Grand Marshals of the Harvest Festival Parade.
The couple, who both grew up in the area and have spent decades giving back to the community said that the recognition came as a complete surprise. "We were on our way home from Alaska. It was the furthest thing from our minds. We were about to end our 9,200-mile driving trip to and from Alaska. So to get this call when we were less than 100 miles from home was a nice 'Welcome home,'" Donna said.
When asked what the honor meant to them, they explained, "(It's) nice to be recognized as we both grew up in the area." They added, "It takes a village to raise a family and we are proud of this village. It's been a great place to raise our family."
Donna explained that their service to the community had always been a shared effort. "We both have been involved over the years. Kelly served as a volunteer firefighter for several years when we lived in the Lime Springs area. I've been actively involved in many organizations over the years and continue to be involved. She continued, "Again, we both love this area and are always looking for ways we can help make it better. We have met so many people by being involved and cherish the friendships we have made along the way."
Reflecting on proud moments of service, Donna said, "There are so many but for me being involved with the RHSHC Hospital Foundation and Dollars for Scholars when they began stand out to me. Being a founding member of these organizations, knowing both are still going and thriving, makes me proud."
They also hoped their role as Grand Marshals would encourage others. "Get involved whenever you can. You will meet some great people and many relationships and friendships are gained."
