Locals Flock to Kinnick Stadium to Witness Historic 'Banana Ball' Games

Known as “The Greatest Show in Sports”, baseball took on a whole new meaning at Kinnick Stadium as the Savannah Banas brought their own play style of the popular ‘Banana Ball’ to Iowa City for a two-game series over Independance Day weekend.
The "Banana Ball" games featuring the Savannah Bananas against the Firefighters took in their Iowa debut to two sold-out games that drew in crowds of over 70,000 fans each day, making it a massive event to remember.
Apart from the thrilling ‘banana ball’ style baseball action on the field, the weekend was highlighted by the inclusion of iconic Iowa Hawkeyes traditions and special guests that added to the excitement.
One of the standout moments was the heartwarming gesture of "The Wave" performed by the Savannah Bananas players to patients at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Both players and fans alike turned and waved toward the hospital overlooking Kinnick Stadium, the gesture drew loud applause and provided a heartfelt connection between the game and the young patients watching from their rooms. This special interaction, as always, left a lasting impact on both the players and the children.
Another memorable moment of the weekend was the unpredictable Iowa weather, which led to the longest lightning delay in Banana Ball history during the Friday night game, in addition to a torrential downpour as some attendees described it. Despite the challenges, the unwavering support of the Iowa fans stood out. Owner Jesse Cole expressed gratitude for the fans' dedication, acknowledging their resilience and commitment to the team.
The weekend was filled with additional highlights, including a live performance from the lead singer of The Fray and a halftime football game featuring former Iowa football legends Brad Banks and Dallas Clark. The atmosphere was filled with energy and passion from the Iowa fans, leaving a lasting impression on both the Savannah Bananas and Firefighters teams.
In a social media post, owner Jesse Cole shared his sentiments about the memorable weekend in Iowa, emphasizing the significance of the experience and thanking the fans for their unwavering support saying, “It’s hard to put into words what Iowa meant to us this weekend. It was one of the most powerful and emotional weekends we’ve ever experienced”. Also adding, "Until the next time Iowa, thank you for every
thing! You have our hearts!”.
The historic moment of witnessing 'banana ball' play in Iowa brought excitement and joy to many who gathered for a day of fun entertainment and family time. The event marked a significant milestone as the first group ever to witness this unique game in the state. The crowd was thrilled to be part of such a momentous occasion, with spectators of all ages coming together to enjoy the novel experience. Even some locals got to go enjoy the momentous occasion - for those lucky few, it will be a day to remember.
After the games, the Savannah Bananas left Iowa City with hearts full of gratitude and memories that will last a lifetime, just as they left the 140,000 fans that came together from 49 states on our country’s 250th Anniversary.
