A New Chapter: ‘Continuing the Tradition of Care’ now at Schmelzer Funeral Home

CRESCO - Formerly known Lindstrom’s Funeral Homes, a new chapter of compassionate care and trusted service has recently taken shape under the ownership of Shannon and Pat Schmelzer. 

The business, now known as Schmelzer Funeral Homes, has three locations in Iowa: Cresco, Lime Springs, and Riceville, as well as one in Harmony, MN, and has served local communities for well over 50 years.

New owner, Shannon Schmelzer, worked for Lindstrom Funeral Homes for eight years prior to purchasing the business back in June of 2024. Besides being known in the community as a funeral director, Schmelzer has been a local her entire life. She attended Crestwood schools and now lives right outside of Ridgeway with her husband Pat, where they’ve raised their five boys together.

At the age of 40, Schmelzer took a leap and started her second career by returning to school to receive her mortuary science degree and become a licensed Funeral Director in both Iowa and Minnesota. 

When Schmelzer was asked why she chose this profession, she stated, “I love to take care of people. The role of a caregiver is very important and so rewarding”.

While in many aspects, being a Funeral Director is a very rewarding job, it is also a very difficult one. Being on call 24/7, working a minimum of 10-12 hours per day, and helping families navigate the loss of a loved one can be a stressful position to be in.  

Schmelzer appreciates the continued support from her family and the community as she continues to transition to the new proprietorship.

“I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to purchase the funeral home.”

The Lindstrom family has had the funeral home for decades. So, the fact that he (Lee Lindstrom) allowed me to make the purchase before opening it up to any buyers is huge for me,” stated Schmelzer.
