CRESCO - Sandy Thorson and her crew were happy to get back into honoring veterans with Quilts of Valor. Over the Memorial Day weekend, they were busy distributing the quilts.
On Friday, May 28, a Quilts of Valor ceremony was held at Cresco Assisted Living, where four veterans received quilts — John Daly, Air Force; John Bartels, National Guard; Richard Wagoner, U.S. Army; and Dean Stark, U.S. Army Reserves.
Thorson told those gathered she and others make the quilts because of the love they have for veterans. She has a husband, sons, brothers, brother-in-law and more who have served.
She explained that it was Evelyn Adamec, who was in attendance, who introduced her to Quilts of Valor back in 2009.
“A Quilt of Valor is not a charity quilt. A Quilt of Valor is not a blanket. It is a quilt consisting of three layers.”
Thorson explained the top of the quilt, with its many colors, shapes and fabrics represents the communities and the many individuals that it makes up. “Each stitch in the quilt represents the love, gratitude and sometimes tears of the maker.”
The batting represents warmth, comfort, peace and healing, and the backing is the strength.
“A Quilt of Valor is priceless. It can never be bought. It should never be sold, it is not a birthday gift or present in any form. It is an award to honor those who have served and comes from the heart of the makers and their community.”
She told the four recipients, “May your Quilt of Valor be a healing and a comfort to each of you when you need it and a continued reminder that we honor and thank you for your service and sacrifice.”
Sandy’s husband, Nate, gave the prayer and read a poem he wrote. He told those receiving quilts, “It is our privilege to honor you, and I want you to know this quilt is a labor of love.”
The men then received a quilt and a hug from her and friend Jan Praska.
