CRESCO - Peter Niel Olsgard, Sr., age 87, of Cresco, Iowa passed away at his residence on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020 surrounded by his family.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Peter was born on April 9, 1933 to Peter and Rose (Johnson) Olsgard at their home near Spring Grove, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. He attended country school at New House, Minn., later attending school in Spring Grove, where he had to leave before graduating to go to work.
On March 27, 1952, he married Lillian Bohach at Trinity Lutheran in Spring Grove. He farmed from 1952-1963. He also worked at Fred Carlson Construction in Decorah, Iowa, where he started out as a truck driver and mechanic in 1963. He eventually worked his way up in the company to truck foreman before retiring after 33 years. During his time there, he and Lillian also started the Olsgard Silo Business in Cresco, Iowa in 1982, which continues to this day.
Retirement was no option for him. He very much enjoyed investing his time into business, and also enjoyed the relationship and time he spent with the local farmers and the stories they shared. His passion was farming and raising and caring for animals. Through the years he raised many kinds including cows, horses, donkeys and mules. One of the special animals he cared for was his best friend, “Casey” the parrot. He also enjoyed planting flowers.
Peter worked hard in his life to provide for his family. He believed in the power of prayer. He will surely be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian of Cresco; children, Lolita (Keith) Buttolph of Riceville, Iowa, Peter (Carrie) Olsgard of Cresco, Arleen (Jon) Kinter of Riceville, Connie (Tom) Meyer of Spillville, Iowa, Perry (Michelle) Olsgard of Pine Island, Minn., Holly (Ron) Robson of Panora, Iowa, John (Deb) Olsgard of Decorah and Jeff (Brenda) Olsgard of Dover, Minn.; 31 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cindy Nelson; and three sisters, Mary (Clarence) Olson, Rosella (Lenard) Olson and one stillborn.
