CRESCO - Dorothy R. Barnes, age 96, of Cresco, Iowa, died on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022 at Regional Health Services of Howard County. She has resided at Evans Memorial Home since October 2021. Previously she was at Donald Lundak Center since 2016.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022 at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, with Fr. Don Hertges presiding. Visitation will be held before Mass at 9:45 a.m., with a rosary at 9:30. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco is handling the arrangements.
Dorothy R. Barnes was born on Jan. 24, 1926 in Ossian, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Anna Hertges. She graduated from DeSales High School in Ossian. After high school, she worked in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
On May 17, 1948, Dorothy married Russell A. Barnes at Ossian DeSales Catholic Church. They raised their family in Cresco, the parents of Rebecca Patterson (Dick) Holstad of Fort Collins, Colo., John (Theresa) Barnes of Cresco, Michaeleen (John) Swanson of Richfield, Minn., Colleen (Kevin) Crow of Cresco and Daniel Barnes of Austin, Minn..
Dorothy and Rusty were avid fishermen and spent most weekends on the Mississippi River. She was a loving mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for being a very good cook and baker.
As her family grew older, Dorothy worked at HECO in Harmony and DECO in Decorah and then in the laundry at Evans Memorial Home. She was a member of Assumption Altar & Rosary Society.
Dorothy was the last of a generation on both sides of the family. She is survived by her five children; 13 grandchildren, Mike (Lisa) Patterson, Janna (Chad) Arndt, Jeremy Barnes, Sarah (Kilyn) Nuehring, Jacob (Josie) Swanson, Michaela Swanson, Charlie (Kelsey) Swanson, Jeffrey Crow, Stefanie (Tom) Flaws, Amber (Josh) Flatness, Cody (Samantha) Barnes, Cameron (Sally Story) Barnes and Delanie (Levi) Suhr; 15 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell “Rusty”; her son-in-law, Clair Patterson; six half-siblings, Nick Hertges, Mayme Klee, Greg Hertges, Hilda Sundry, Clarence Hertges and Florence Hawkins; three brothers, Leonard Hertges, Ralph Hertges and Donald Hertges; two sisters, Marcelite Bucheit and Gladys Wolfe; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
