Crestwood football team trounces MFL-Mar-Mac

CRESCO - An outstanding effort on both sides of the ball helped the Crestwood varsity football team crush the MFL-Mar-Mac Bulldogs, 50-0, in the season opener for both teams on Friday, Aug. 28, at Crestwood.

The Cadets cruised to a 31-0 halftime lead before adding three more scores in the third quarter en route to the impressive win.

“We started the game fast,” Cadet Head Coach Justin Denner said. “Our defense did a great job of getting off the field to start the game. We got a fourth down stop to get a short field. Our offense started well by scoring on our first three drives, which was great.

“We still have some things we need to fix. We’ll look at the film with a fine toothed comb because we have a lot more (games) to get ready for with our non-district and district games. This was a great start to the season.

“We got all the guys in the game and saw a lot of good things from them. Everyone played hard, which is all we ask from them. At halftime, we honored the 2016 district champion team. This week was about honoring the past (teams). We do that with how we play the game by playing hard. The execution (of plays) will ebb and flow, but we just need to continue to grow and get better.

“This win gives us momentum going into the Decorah game (on Sept. 4 at home). We’ll watch some film, but we know we’ll need to be a better team than we were (against MFL) because Decorah will give us a tough challenge,” Denner said.
