4-H Programs Empowering Youth through Hands-on Learning

HOWARD COUNTY - 4-H, the nation's largest youth development organization, is making waves by empowering nearly 6 million young people across the U.S. through hands-on learning. Originating in the American heartland around 1902-1912, 4-H was founded to advance agricultural practices by engaging youth in practical, hands-on projects. The organization's name represents the four H's: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.
Operated in the United States through the USDA Cooperative Extension System in partnership with over 100 public land-grant universities and 3,000 local extension offices, 4-H offers a variety of projects for youth to participate in. These projects range from traditional farming and livestock care to rocketry, robotics, cooking, and modern artificial intelligence challenges.
The impact of 4-H programs is evident in the positive youth development it fosters. Grounded in experiential learning, 4-H helps young people build confidence, resilience, and make valuable contributions to their communities. Studies have shown that 4-H participants are four times more likely to give back to their communities and twice as likely to be involved in STEM programs.
In Howard County, 4-H programs are thriving, with local youth benefitting from the organization's commitment to providing valuable hands-on experiences. Participants are gaining valuable skills and knowledge that will benefit them well into the future. Whether it's learning about agriculture, technology, or leadership, 4-H is helping the youth of Howard County grow and succeed.
