WAUKON - The Crestwood varsity football team held off a late rally by Waukon to earn a hard-fought 32-26 win over the Indians on Friday, Oct. 16.
The win allowed the Cadets (7-1 overall, 4-1 district) to clinch the runner-up spot in Class 2A District 3 and earn a home game against Hampton-Dumont-CAL (4-4, 3-2) in the first round of the playoffs set for Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m.
Tickets for Friday's playoff game go on sale at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20 through HomeTown Ticketing. Tickets for this round cost $10, kindergarten age and up. Cash, online, or credit/debit are all accepted.
No passes are accepted. Listed is the link: https://www.iahsaa.org/tickets/
Waukon (5-3, 4-1) earned the District 3 title because their point differential (11.0) was slightly higher than Crestwood’s (8.8).
“It was a great effort by all of our guys,” Cadet Head Coach Justin Denner said. “We played really hard. We were able to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and do great things there.
“Our guys made a lot of timely plays. Mitchell Williams had a great game at wide receiver. He had one touchdown catch and another catch which could have been a touchdown (a fumble in the end zone) that Reegan Wilson jumped on for a score.
“Alex Loden played very well, as did our offensive and defensive lines. We got a few turnovers, which was good. This was a great response from last week with the loss to Osage. This week, everyone in our program responded well. It was a big step forward for us.
“This is 100 percent momentum for us going into the playoffs. If we wouldn’t have beaten Waukon, we would be going on the road a long way for the first round of the playoffs. Now, we’re back where we need to be (at home), which we haven’t had in years.
“I wish we wouldn’t have given up that late score to Waukon (in the fourth quarter), but overall, we did a lot of great things and we can feel good about what we did,” Denner said.
