CRESCO - Adrian Bernard Schatz, age 94, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on June 2, 2021, at Regional Health Services of Howard County.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 7, 2021, from 4-7 p.m. at Notre Dame Church, Cresco with a Scripture Service at 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held on June 8, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Church with visitation, one hour prior to the service.
Adrian was born on Dec. 31, 1926, to Albert and Walburga Schatz in Cresco. He was the second youngest of five children and attended St. Joseph Grade School. After his eighth grade graduation, he worked at home on the family farm while his brothers served in World War II.
Growing up on farms about one mile apart, Adrian found his bride, Elizabeth (Betty) Shea, and they married at St. Joseph Church on Aug. 22, 1951. After marriage, they moved to an adjoining farm and lived there until 1997, when they moved to Cresco. They were married 69 years and brought eight children to this union.
Even after “retiring,” Adrian went to the farm on a daily basis to “assist” Alan and John, to maintain large gardens and to be the caretaker of the Howard Center Township Cemetery. While working on the garden, he had a heart attack. He was quite proud that he was able to mow the cemetery and have it ready for Memorial Day Weekend this year.
He was proud of being a lifetime parishioner of Notre Dame Church and appreciated visiting with parishioners and Fr. Jacob Rouse. Fr. Jacob demonstrated a deep know-ledge of Adrian, as he anointed him at his death. He told Adrian, “This anointing will not cost you anything,” and this gave him peace.
Adrian enjoyed being with family and relatives, especially when it included a game of cards. One of the first questions he would ask, “Do you have time for a game?” After losing his license to drive, Julie became his favorite child for a day when she took him to the casino. Walking into a casino gave him childlike joy.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Schatz; three sons and five daughters, John Schatz (Joanne White) of Cresco, Alan (Wendy) Schatz of Cresco, Theresa Puffer of Plymouth, Minn., Carol (Dean) Dusheck of Plymouth, Diane (Kim) Wohlsdorf of Rochester, Minn., Susan (Greg) Hurlebaus of Rochester, Julie (Joseph) Haskovec of Lime Springs, Iowa and Fr. David Schatz of Dubuque, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren and one on the way. His only living sibling is Leoba Dotzler of Tucson, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Wilfred, Raphael and Joseph Schatz; and daughter-in-law, Dianne Schatz.
In lieu of flowers, memorials or gifts in his memory can be given to Notre Dame Parish.
